Trexie is one of our Family Medicine Virtual Medical Assistants. She started out in an ER at a public hospital, dealing with a wide range of health issues and people of all ages. This experience has been vital in her current role, where she uses her medical knowledge to support family medicine patients.
Working in the ER, Trexie encountered different health issues, from minor injuries to major emergencies, helping patients from newborns to the elderly. Making quick decisions and effective problem-solving were part of the job every day. As a VMA she uses these skills to handle medication refills and process Prior Authorizations. This work supports the administrative side of patient care, ensuring patients receive their medications on time and assisting them with specific details of their health plans related to medication coverage.
Trexie kicks off her day with a cup of coffee and quickly gets to work on refilling prescriptions and handling Prior Authorizations for everything from controlled substances to PRN (as needed) meds. Her job involves digging deep into each patient's medical needs to make sure their prescriptions are approved by insurance. "It's a part of the job that keeps me on my toes," she says. Trexie's careful work ensures that patients receive their medications without delay, helping the clinic run smoothly and keeping care on track.
One time, Trexie stayed late to help a patient sign up for a medication refill program, so they didn't miss their essential meds. It wasn't part of her usual job duties. “It was after hours, and the clinic staff were busy, but I used my knowledge about our HINT Membership Program to assist the patient,” she recounts. Her quick thinking resolved the patient’s confusion and kept their treatment on track. “Sometimes you have to step up and use what you know to help out, even if it's not part of your everyday job,” Trexie adds.
Outside of work, Trexie enjoys quality time with her family. “I love spending time with my son and bonding with my family,” she says.
Working as a VMA in family medicine is both challenging and fulfilling for Trexie. “Every day brings new challenges, but it’s rewarding to manage them and know that you are making a difference in the lives of patients across all ages,” she concludes.
Transitioning from an ER nurse to a virtual setting, Trexie has adapted her medical skills to the nuances of family medicine, providing comprehensive care and support. Her ability to apply her hospital-honed skills in a virtual environment not only ensures thorough patient care but also demonstrates the versatility and critical impact of VMAs in today’s healthcare landscape.
