The eCommerce is booming.  Business owners don’t just create a web site and expect customers to locate them by merely using word-of-mouth marketing. They have to maximize the use of the internet in promoting their business.

Social media marketing is one of the best ways to make your business known to your target market. Through social networking sites, you can publicize your business, find prospective customers, and more importantly, you’ll be able to engage in conversations helping your company to build rapport and trust toward your prospect clients.

The question is how do you use social media as a marketing tool?  How do you compose those  posts?  How updated are they? Do you interact with your followers?

Here are some tips on how to use social media marketing in building your business.

Avoid hard-selling.

That’s a big NO when using social media to build your network.  Know the interest of your followers and give them something they can benefit from – trivia, tips, questions, and maybe, some good reads.  Give variety to your posts. When they’re interested, they’ll click the link. When they’re not, they won’t no matter how much you tell them to.

Manual updates are always better than canned ones.  

Man replies, applications do not. If possible, write your posts manually. When you generate queued posts using applications like TweetDeck or Hootsuite, tendency is that people will assume that a person was there and when they decided to comment on the post, they won’t get a reply and they’ll end up disappointed. You can generate posts if needed but minimize it as much as possible.

Keep an eye on your posts.

Don’t just copy and paste. READ. Double check your post before posting. Watch out for grammatical errors, misspelled words, and redundancy of posts. If you are posting daily, you can keep a record of the content of your post in a spreadsheet and refer back to it when posting on the succeeding days to make sure that none of the posts were posted again. If you want to share the post again, at least tweak the content to give your followers something new to read.

Observe, learn, and apply.

Learn from other users especially from those who are in the same niche as yours.  How many followers do they have and how do they increase them? Can you learn something about their posting strategies?

Less about you, more about them.

The main goal of social media marketing is for you to be able to reach out to your target audience while promoting your business by targeting their interests. Post something about their interest and interact with them, and you will most likely earn followers.  Post everything about your product or company and be ready to be ignored.

These are just some ways on how you can maximize the use of social media to build your business. Remember, it’s not just all about the number of posts that you make, it’s the quality of those posts that counts.
